Once we were free from the roadblock we rushed to the red course, which was noticeably harder. Realistically it should have taken us half that time. Which meant the blue course, which was fun but not physically taxing, took our group of four a whole hour to complete. Unfortunately on the blue course one of our fellow participants did not seem to understand this courtesy and would not let our group pass. We were advised that if we were slower on the obstacles than the people behind us, we should let them pass so as not to create a bottleneck. It was recommended that adults who have not done this kind of thing before start on the blue course and work their way up. This practice made us feel confident in our safety – having that opportunity to try things out was a fantastic idea. There is a small sample course (one bridge and a tiny flying fox) very low to the ground to try out your gear before getting on the course proper.

Our two-hour session began with a thorough safety briefing which covered how to use the lock-in safety system and other safety aspects such as use of ladders and flying foxes. I recommend buying your own gloves ($2 a pair) as the loan pairs are understandably filthy.

Trees Adventure recommend you get there 20 minutes early to have your waiver signed and get your gear on (harness, helmet, gloves). Their directions to the park were spot on – without them it would be difficult to locate as it is up a steep residential dirt road.

They have very limited parking so recommend car pooling. The thorough website answered all the questions I had about the facility. We booked our tickets online as they limit numbers per session. You aren’t allowed to try black until you have successfully completed the red course. There are four courses graded according to difficulty - green is the kids course, followed by blue, red, and black. Trees Adventure is a tree-top obstacle course which includes flying foxes, cargo nets, rope bridges and other apparatus that would be right at home on shows such as Gladiators or Ninja Warrior. Trees Adventure in Belgrave let us live out that fantasy, albeit 20 years too late (and minus Vulcan swinging a giant cotton bud at us).

When I was in school, my friends and I used to dream about appearing on the TV show Gladiators. I would recommend catching the train to Belgrave, taking the short cut from the train station to the Puffing Billy ticket box and then following the road down the hill and then up the hill to Glen Harrow Park. As we were leaving there were several cars that were spinning their wheels driving up the hill on the slippery dirt road. The road leading to the car park is quite steep and in wet weather may not suit all cars. Facilities are quite basic with only a few snacks available for purchase and the toilets in the car park, but for a few hour visit it is fine.

We can't wait to go back and have a crack at the black courses. By the time we finished there were quite a few people lined up due to more groups starting. I would recommend an early time slot as there are less people on the course. I would highly recommend it to anyone with tweens or teens. The 2 hours seemed to go by fast and it would have been great to have more time but we were tired and sore so it does seem like a reasonable length of time. The weather was not kind to us and lightly rained for a lot of our 2 hours but it did not dampened our enjoyment, it only made the course slightly harder due to slippery cables etc. My daughter had a smile from ear to ear for the rest of the day. We completed the red course and were just over our 2 hour slot so we had to finish. There was a little wait to get on and we got held up by some people that were struggling on one of the challenges, but it was not too bad. We completed the short blue course, then the long blue course. My daughter (9 years old) took a little time to get used to the 2 safety straps and the locking system but after our first course she seemed like a pro. The initial training was good as it gives first timers a practice with the safety gear without getting off the ground. We arrived early as required and got set up in our helmet, gloves and harness.

It was a father daughter activity that we thought might be fun. I took my daughter to Trees Adventure on our last trip to Melbourne.
